Help! Advice about an abscess!?

My husband is currently suffering from an abscess on the lower part of his back. He made an appt last week to see his GP %26amp; was seen Fri lunchtime. The doctor examined him %26amp; prescribed a course of anti-biotics. At the time the abscess was very red %26amp; had a substantial yellow area in the middle. He started taking them straight away %26amp; is still taking them now. He was given a 7day course. The pain my husband is in got so bad that y'day we called up to the A%26amp;E dept near our home to see if there was anything they could do there %26amp; then. The triage nurse recommended that he wait until his course of anti-biotics has finished before doing anything else as the yellow area had reduced. My husband is in serious pain. He isn't eating, or sleeping because of it. When anything touches it he is in agony. He can't sit, he can't stand, he can't walk around. We thought once the anti-biotics started to work the pain would lessen but it has got much much worse! Has anyone had any experience of this?Help! Advice about an abscess!?
get in to see the Dr right away.. it probably needs to be lanced.. it is the pressure of the infection that is causing the pain...

he might be able to bring it to a head if he sits in a hot bath with lots of epsom salts to try to draw it out and then sit with a heating pad to also help with it to break.. but ask the Dr..Help! Advice about an abscess!?
I was told by a doctor that these type of abscesses are not treat able with antibiotics as they build their own walls which are not penetrable and this makes any medication ineffective.Go to hospital today..my son ended up having emergency surgery when his burst..he had been on antibiotics for a week..good luck..hope hubby feels better soon
Put him in the car right now and take him to the emergency room before he gets blood poisoning. The antibiotics should have kicked in by now. I'm not a doc or nurse.
think you need to take him into A%26amp;E straight way or call for an amulance.......or even try www.nhsdirect.co.uk..they might even help you.....good luck
sounds very painful and serious.i would go back to the doctor, he may give appropriate pain relief.are you putting anything on it?i saw a science programme that said manuka honey was being used in hospitals and applied directly to the abcess.(can be bought at m%26amp;s)check it out. hope it works for you
Absolutely.

Go direct to A and E NOW.

Antibiotics don't always rid the abcess. You need to get this looked at urgently.

I sincerely hope your husband feels better soon. Poor love.

DONT bother with NHS direct as they may try and fob you off!

I am a registered Nurse

either get a taxi to a and e or a friend or ambulance
Oooh ouch! I've never had an abcess so I cant really help. I would suggest you could try gingerly rubbing a pain relief cream over the affected area as well as taking pills. Hope he gets better soon!
abscesses such as those need more than just antibiotics. also it sounds like it is more than just a simple abscess. it could be a pilo-nidal cyst. he needs that bugger incised and drained. thats the only way he can get some pain relief and proper healing.
years ago the abscess would have been incised and the pain would have been relieved immediatley nowdays doctors like to see more suffering
dont phone a%26amp;e go there and get it seen to
